The history of Primark

The native Canadian and founder W. Garfield Weston became aware of emigrated to London trade manager and tie seller Arthur Ryan in the 1960s. He instructed Ryan to build a discount store franchise with around 50,000 pounds in Ireland. Ryan then opened his first store called Penneys in the popular Dublin Mary Street. The shop still exists today and the board of the Primark group is located in the same building. In the same year, several other branches were opened around Dublin. In the early 70s, the company then was forced to relocate the production to low-wage Asian countries.

In 1974, more openings in the UK shopping streets in Bristol or Derby followed. The first multiple acquisition took place by five Irish Woolworth stores in 1984. In 2000, Primark acquired 11 branches of C&A, since they wanted to retire from the UK. The first store opened outside of the UK and Ireland was in Madrid. And then, a few years later, some sort of Primark online shop was launched.
